About provenance

Mission

provenance exists to help people understand art through context. We believe that art is more than decoration—it's a window into history, culture, and human experience.

Every artwork carries layers of meaning: the historical moment it was created, the artist's intent, the cultural forces that shaped it. Understanding these layers transforms how we see.

How It Works

provenance teaches art history through four interconnected layers:

  • Visual Literacy: How to see composition, color, technique, and symbol
  • Historical Context: What was happening: politics, technology, economics, culture
  • Artist as Responder: Why individual artists made specific creative choices
  • Work as Consequence: How artwork influenced what became possible next

Why provenance is free

provenance is completely free for all learners. There are no subscriptions, no paywalls, and no plans to charge for access.

This is a labor of love. I built provenance because I believe art history should be accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford it. The platform is supported by optional tips from learners who find value in it, and through thoughtful affiliate partnerships with museums and art books.

Support provenance

provenance is completely free and will always remain free. If you find value in what I've built, you can support the project through an optional tip. Your support helps cover hosting costs and allows me to continue adding new courses and artwork.

Tips are entirely optional. The platform is free regardless.
